The invention provides means and methods for diagnosing non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), more in particular it provides means and methods for distinguishing NASH from steatosis, even more in particular in children. Therefore, an In vitro method is provided for diagnosing pediatric NASH comprising the step of determining the level of cathepsin D in a sample from a child, comparing the level with a predetermined reference value and concluding that the child has pediatric NASH if the level of cathepsin D in the sample is below the reference value.
