PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical device having good optical characteristics, a control device for the liquid crystal optical device, and an image display device.SOLUTION: According to an embodiment, there is provided a liquid crystal optical device including an optical part and a control part. The control part operates the device in a first mode and a second mode on the basis of at least any of image information to be input and an acquired control signal. In the first mode, the device forms a first lens and a second lens. In the second mode, the device forms a third lens and a fourth lens. The absolute value of potential difference in forming the first lens is different from the absolute value of potential difference in forming the third lens.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
