The present invention relates to a method and device for executing a symbol lock operation on an input/output (I/O) interface. On the I/O interface between a memory controller and a memory device, the memory controller transmits a write command, symbol lock patterns, and write data bursts while the memory device receives symbol lock patterns in a preamble section and receives the write data bursts after write latency. The memory device generates a write enable signal from the write command and includes a symbol lock pattern detection unit. The symbol lock pattern detection unit stores multiple symbol lock patterns, detects the symbol lock patterns based on the write enable signal, and searches for the first data of the write data bursts based on the detected symbol lock patterns.
