Abstract of the disclosure The invention relates to a rock drilling unit and a method of changing drill rods in a rock drilling unit. The rock drilling unit (1) comprises a feed beam (2), a re tainer device (14), a rock drilling machine (4) and at least one clamp (15). The clamp is operable without driving force of the drilling unit. The clamp comprises a space (21) for receiving one single drill rod (11). The clamp is positioned in a side position (16) which is parallel to a drilling axis (D) and is at a transfer dis tance from the drilling axis.
