[Class 108 (ii)] In an independent wheel-suspension for vehicles of the kind in which the wheel-carrying bracket 23, Fig. 1, is supported by a pair of arms 27, 28 joumalled at their inner ends in rubber bushings adapted to be stressed in shear or torsion one or both of the rubber bushings 13, Fig. 5, is surrounded by a divided sleeve 15 which is adapted to be held in radial compression upon the rubber, while means are provided for adjusting the initial position of the supported arm 27 or 28 whilst the vehicle structure still remains supported upon the wheels. In the construction shown the forked ends 31 of the arm 28 are clamped on a spindle 12a, Fig. 2, and an auxiliary tube 35 surrounds the divided sleeve 15. Welded to the tube 35 is an arm 36 to the end of which is pivoted an adjusting rod 37 fitted with nuts 38, whereby the initial stress in the rubber 13 can be varied without raising the vehicle from the ground. A single upper arm 27 has a tubular inner end 29 embracing the sleeve 15, while the inner sleeve or spindle 12 is provided with serrated ends 39 engaging correspondingly serrated trunnions 30, such arrangement permitting an adjustment of the spindle 12 in the factory. In addition, the spindle 12 is capable of axial adjustment by means of screws 40 and nuts 41, so that the caster angle of the wheels may be adjusted. In order to lessen the plunging of the vehicle body due to deceleration in braking, the axis of the spindles 12, 12a preferably converge rearwardly towards each other as shown in Fig. 6. Modifications are described in which only the upper arm 27 or the lower arm 28 is mounted at its inner in a rubber bushing capable of adjustment whilst the vehicle body remains supported. In all constructions a doubleacting hydraulic shock-absorber 44 may be located between the arms 27, 28 or between an arm and a bracket, surrounding the rubber bushing. |
