A vertical axis wind or water turbine revolves about a central axis 1. A series of horizontal arms 2 are connected in a radial fashion to the central axis. A series of blades 3 are connected to the arms 2. As the wind speed 8 increases it causes the device to rotate about the central axis . The prevailing wind 8 lifts the blade presenting a large surface area for the wind to act on. Stops, not shown, prevent the blade from moving past the optimum point. As the device continues to rotate the blade starts to feather as it turns into the wind presenting a small surface area and least resistance to the wind. Stops, not shown, prevent the blade from moving past the optimum position. Due to the helical distribution of the arms on the central shaft the blades are staggered in their position on the shaft ensuring a constant presentation of a flat blade to the prevailing wind. The device may also be used as a water turbine. |
