A monitoring apparatus 10 comprises a support tripod 20 with at least three support legs; a telescopic mast 22 adapted to be supported in an upright orientation by the support tripod, a probe assembly 25 that includes a heatproof inlet line (92, fig 4), and at least one gas analysing instrument 41, 42, 44 along with means 40 to generate a gas flow. A flexible line 28 that communicates between the probe assembly and the gas analysing instrument incorporates a heater to maintain the temperature of the flexible line above a threshold temperature. The probe assembly is arranged to be supported by the telescopic mast, and at least part of the mast is rotatable about its longitudinal axis through at least a limited turning angle. The apparatus enables the gases produced by a chimney stack 12 to be monitored while combustion occurs within the stack, as the inlet line can be positioned in a desired location in or above the stack while the operator can remain at ground level throughout the process. |
