An integrated surgical instrument 1 for reducing smoke particles suspended in a patients abdomen during open surgery procedures comprising a surgical device 2 having an electrically conductive portion 2a, and an ion-generating electrode 3 having an ion emission zone 7 preferably formed of a sharpened or fibrous element. The ion emission zone 7 being moveable relative to the electrically conductive portion 2a between a first position and a second position, preferably along an arcuate path. The distance between the emission zone 7 and the conductive portion 2a in the second position further preferably falls within a pre-determined range dependent upon the proximity of patient tissue with respect to the ion emission zone 7. The surgical instrument may further comprise multiple ion emission zones 7, each of which is selectively moveable. Further independent claims are also provided for an assembly comprising the surgical instrument 2 and a DC electrical source, and a method of reducing smoke particles suspended in a patients abdomen. |
