Apparatus for heat sealing thermoplastic webs comprises means for supporting and carrying thermoplastic web products through the apparatus, an elongated heating member supported for movement into and out of contact with the upper surface of a web product being carried through the apparatus and a relative short heating element similarly mounted at a point forwardly of but in line with the elongated heating member, whereby the same surface area of said web product may be contacted first by the elongated member and immediately following by the short member as the web product is carried through the apparatus. In the embodiment shown, the apparatus includes a framework 13, a conveyer mechanism 15, comprising a pair of endless belts 53 and 55, a first relatively long heating member 17 and a second relatively short heating member 19. The members 17 and 19 are heated by one or more electric heating elements and are thermostatically controlled. The heating members 17 and 19 may be simultaneously raised or lowered by shifting a controlrod 135 the members 17 and 19 being connected to the control rod 135 by a system of links and rods. The heating members may be held in the raised position by locking mechanism 155 and the members 19 are adjustable both as to their angle of contact with the web product passing through the apparatus and also as to the pressure they exert on the web product. |
