<p>A selenium rectifier is produced by coating a base electrode with selenium and a non-halogen containing additive for increasing the crystallisation rate of the selenium, both the selenium and the additive being deposited simultaneously from the vapour state. The additive is applied at least during the initially applied portion of the layer, but the amount may be varied throughout the layer. The additive may be mixed with the selenium before vaporization, or the separate vapours may be mixed. Suitable additive materials are ammonia and its derivatives, amines such as triethylamine, or organic compounds containing sulphur or selenium such as mercaptans e.g. alkyl mercaptans and sulphides and polysulphides e.g. dialkyl sulphide and dialkyl disulphide and the corresponding selenium compounds.
