511,941. Fluid-pressure engines. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Dec. 22, 1937, No. 35483. Convention date, Aug. 14. [Class 122 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] Engines with groups of radial, multiple cylinders connected to cranks by master-rods and subsidiary link rods have the master rods and/or the cranks so arranged as to reduce vibrations due to harmonics of the torque variation. The groups are arranged so that their vibrations balance out or neutralize. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the cylinders of each group are staggered with respect to the cylinders in the adjacent group. The cranks of the adjacent groups are arranged oppositely, with their master rods 22, 34 respectively as nearly as possible in coincidence. The harmonic components of the torque curves of the respective groups when added together result in a reduction of the exciting vibratory forces. In an arrangement such as shown in Fig. 2, the master rods may remain as shown, and one of the crankpins moved through 180 degrees to bring it into axial alignment with the other crank pin. |
