The Specification comprises (1) the production of e -acyl-lysines by saponifying caprolactam, acylating the resulting e -aminocaproic acid, chlorinating the e -acylaminocaproic acid and treating the chlorinated acid with ammonia, and (2) e -acyl-lysines of the formula R - CO - NH - (CH2)4 - CH(NH2)- COOH where R is an alkyl group of 2 or more carbon atoms. The chlorination step is carried out with sulphuryl chloride or a mixture thereof with thionyl chloride. The amination is preferably effected in the absence of iron, using an ammonia solution containing at least 50 per cent by weight of ammonia. Examples are given of the process using as acylating agents acetic anhydride, butyryl chloride, a -chlorobutyryl chloride, lauroyl chloride and adipoyl chloride, the corresponding N-acyl-lysines being recovered; the product from chlorobutyryl chloride is however aminobutyryl-lysine.ALSO:e -Acyl-lysines are used as food additives for cattle and poultry. A graph shows comparative results of the weight of chickens fed on vegetable protein (1) alone, (2) with methionine, and (3) with e -butyryl-lysine. Other compounds mentioned are e -acetyl, e -adipoyl, e -lauroyl and e -aminobutyryl-lysines. |
