A drilling or boring machine for producing through bores and operating with a highpressure liquid cooling-medium, comprises a holding device for retaining the work on the machine spindle and an open-ended member to establish a seal against the work around that part from which the drill emerges on completion of drilling, the open-ended member being capable of limited axial displacement against the pressure of a spring. A hollowspindle 22 rotatable in roller bearings in the machine housing 10 carries at one end a work-supporting and driving member 12. The latter is bell-mouthed and has ribs 20 for engaging and gripping work 14 (broken lines). A driving-pulley 23 is keyed to the rear end of the spindle. Two sleeve members 62, 64 are within the bore of the spindle 22, a spring 66 pressing the sleeve 64 to the right in the drawing. This sleeve rotates with the spindle and carries a rod 94 drawn to the left by a spring 98. A disc 104 on the right-hand end of the rod 94, holds a member 90 against a part-spherical seating 82 on the sleeve 64 through the spring 98. The member 90 has a sealing ring 112 which bears on the end of the work and since this member forms a closure for the end of the hole being drilled upon completion of drilling, the high-pressure coolant is contained and caused to return through the tool. A modification in the arrangement of the member 90 comprises a sealing sleeve within the member 90 which is pressed against the work by the pressure of the coolant. The spring 66 may then be of reduced strength. In each case this spring also serves to eject the work from the holder 12. |
