PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bore cutting tool and a method of making the same.SOLUTION: A bore cutting tool (2) including a tool substrate (4) and a tool coating (8) on a surface of the tool substrate comprises a plurality of pits (6) in the surface of the tool substrate, and the tool coating extends over the pits such that pit surfaces include the tool coating. The pit dimensions can be retained over a prolonged tool life, and the pits, with their coated surfaces, are extremely effective at retaining a lubricant so that the thickness of a lubricant film can be increased compared to a tool without the coated pits. The pits are formed by laser etching and are present only on the cylindrical land.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 |
