Methods and apparatuses, including computer program products, are described for negotiating media capabilities between a plurality of end point devices in a media-based conference session. A server computing device receives a request to join a conference session between a plurality of end point devices, the request received from a first device and comprising a media flow. The server computing device identifies at least one of the first device and a network from which the first device sent the request. The server computing device determines whether a media negotiation profile associated with the identified device exists. The server computing device determines whether a media negotiation profile associated with the identified network exists. The server computing device adjusts one or more of a bitrate, a session description, and a destination multipoint control unit, based upon the media negotiation profiles.
