An electrolytically conducting ion-exchange membrane is prepared by compacting finely divided ion-exchange material, e.g. sulphonated polystyrene, phenol-formaldehyde, and polyamine, and natural clays, and impregnating under pressure with a bonding material such as molten polystyrene which is set by cooling or monomeric styrene or methyl methacrylate which is polymerized. An inert refractory porous material, such as sand, may be incorporated in the mixture before the pressurization stage, and in a modification the ion-exchange material is suspended in liquid binder and filtered to a cake on a press, and the binder polymerized.
