A needle free injection device (100) for use with a cartridge containing an injectate includes a housing (206). The housing includes an end wall (212) at its distal end and an inner wall (214). The inner wall extends in a direction from the proximal end of the housing to the distal end of the housing and separates a first chamber (216) from a second chamber (218) in the housing. The housing includes a first opening disposed in the end wall and is in fluid communication with the first chamber. The housing includes a second opening is in fluid communication with the second chamber. A coupler (224) is disposed in the first chamber for coupling to the cartridge. The first opening and the second opening are in fluid communication via a channel (212) for transfer of fluid between the first chamber and the second chamber.
