Provided is a surgical instrument in which a handpiece 4 is used to treat biological tissue with electrical energy, said surgical instrument comprising: a probe 4c that extends from a base end section toward a tip section in the lengthwise direction and that is capable of applying electrical energy to biological tissue; and an axial rod member 23 that is arranged in the interior of the probe 4c with the part of said axial rod member 23 that is closest to the probe 4c being separated therefrom by a distance d1 at which electrical discharge occurs at a voltage lower than the voltage generated by spark discharge between the probe 4c and the axial rod member 23 and higher than the voltage generated by arc discharge between the probe 4c and the axial rod member 23. |
