A method for manufacturing a shaft body by welding multiple shaft members together, said method comprising: a primary tempering step, carried out before the shaft members are welded together, for subjecting at least one of the shaft members to tempering wherein a region thereof in the vicinity of an end of another shaft member adjacent thereto is tempered such that the strength of the end side of that region is lower than the strength of the opposite side of that region from the end side; a welding step for welding the shaft members after the primary tempering step; and a secondary tempering step for tempering the vicinity of the weld part between the shaft members after the welding step.
