Embodiments of the present invention provide a method for processing data packet and apparatus and the method includes: receiving or sending compression configuration information of an application layer packet; and performing compression processing or decompression processing on the application layer packet according to the compression configuration information. By using the foregoing method, compression and decompression processing of the application layer packet can be implemented, thereby reducing overheads of packet transmission and improving utilization of a network resource.
