The method involves carrying out a simulated work cycle with empty molds (5) of a blow molding machine (B) for preparing a mold change in the machine. Ambient air (L) and cooling water are conveyed at same time through mold cavities via a stretching rod (7) during the cycle. The molds are cooled by the air and the water with respect to a heat-set operating temperature by heat discharge from mold cavity surfaces. The rod is held stationary at a preset cooling position during the cycle relative to a stretching rod movement controlled in a normal operating cycle with a preform in the molds. An independent claim is also included for a blow molding machine comprising a programmable machine control.
