The lighting unit comprises a tubular portion 12 having an attachment aperture 20 about its circumference for attaching the unit to a stanchion or post. The unit also includes outwardly facing illumination portions, with illumination means such as light emitting diodes, LEDs, contacting the tube. A further internal illumination means is contained within the tubular portion which is positioned by the outwardly facing illumination portions. The illumination portions may be in the form of a torus or ring. The lighting unit may be attached to a Belisha beacon and the globe of the beacon is externally illuminated by the internal illumination means. The unit is preferably designed to allow light to be projected towards oncoming traffic on a road but block light emitted transverse to a road. |
