In an induction pipe comprising a part annular passage 20 between two cylindrical parts 10 and 13 one of the latter is circularly adjustable relative to the other in order to lengthen or shorten the peripheral length of the passage. The outer housing 10 which is formed with an inner cylindrical surface 17 embodies a tubular branch 11 for connection to one or more engine cylinders, the branch 11 being tangentially directed to the surface 17. The inner cylindrical part 13, which receives air or mixture at 14 is rotatable within the housing 10 about an axis A, the part 13 having a wall portion 16 bent tengentially outwards to bear against the surface 17; at its outer edge the wall 16 is fitted with a gas-tight seal. By rotating the part 13 the length of the path 20 between the inlet 14 and the branch 11 can be varied between maximum, as shown, and minimum values the latter occurring when the wall 16 is adjacent the branch 11. In a modification, as applied to a multi-cylinder engine the inner cylindrical part is gear driven from the engine through a speed governor so that at low engine speed the path length is a maximum and at high engine speed a minimum; the adjustment may be effected upon movement of the accelerator pedal. The apparatus can be fitted on either side of the carburetter or normal induction manifold and the direction of flow of the air or mixture may be the reverse of that shown by the arrow X. The outer housing may be rotatable about the inner cylindrical part.
