A process for producing a porous carbon material includes carbonizing plant-derived material at 800°C to 1,400°C, then applying a treatment with an acid or alkali and, after said treatment with said acid or alkali, an activation treatment is applied. The process produces a porous carbon material having excellent functionality useable, for example, as an anode material for batteries, an adsorbent, masks, adsorbing sheets, or carriers. There is a porous carbon material having a value of specific surface area of at least 10 m 2 /g as measured by the nitrogen BET method, a silicon content of at most 1 wt% and a pore volume of at least 0.1 cm 3 /g as measured by the BJH method and MP method, and an R value of at least 1.5, where R = B/A and, considering the intensity at an intersection between the baseline of a diffraction peak of a (002) plane as obtained based on powder X-ray diffractometry of said porous carbon material, the perpendicular line downwardly drawn from said diffraction peak is the "A value", and the intensity of said diffraction peak is the "B value". |
