A method and system of welding the ends of a mattress cover 5a,b uses a welding device, e.g. a high frequency welding device 1,2,9 opposite a folding device 3 and involves the steps of: i) using the welding device to pre-weld a first cover part 5a to a second cover part 5b with the edge of the first part offset from the edge of the second part [shown in Figure 3]; ii) using the folding device to fold the second cover part 5b back on itself so that it overlays the first part [shown in Figure 4]; iii) using the welding device to pre-weld the turned back edge [shown in Figure 5]; and iv) using the welding device to weld the turned back edge [shown in Figure 6]. The system also includes gripping and advancing means 6 which moves cover parts together and advances them to the welding device. The mattress cover may be made of a high-strength woven polyester fabric coated with PVC and may also have a bactericidal varnish. The method and system provides a mattress which is fire resistance, impervious, and tear proof thus making it suitable for use in hospitals or penal institutions. |
