Ar-vinyltoluene polymer particles of diameter up to 10m or aggregates of such particles of up to 15m are sulphonated in the presence of an inert diluent, capable of swelling the polymer, by agitating at - 20 DEG to + 40 DEG C. with at least 0.7 mol. of sulphur trioxide per mol. of monomer. The polymer should be free from crosslinking and soluble in toluene, dioxane or methyl ethyl ketone and may contain up to 40 per cent of one or more of vinyl esters, vinyl ketones, vinyl ethers, ethylene, isobutylene, styrene, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, maleic anhydride, vinyl halides and vinylidene halides. In place of sulphur trioxide a sulphur trioxide complex with dioxane, thioxane or bis-(b -chloroethyl) ether may be used. Suitable diluents are liquid sulphur dioxide, methyl chloride, methylene chloride, carbon tetrachloride, ethylene chloride and tetrachloroethylene. Co-diluents, e.g. 1,2,3,4-tetrachloro-1,1,2,3,4,4-hexafluorobutane may be employed. The polymer may be finely divided by crushing or grinding, by atomizing the dissolved or molten polymer or by coagulating, e.g. by freezing or adding electrolytes, or spray drying a polymer emulsion or dispersion. The polymer may be sprinkled on, suspended in air or nitrogen and blown into, or added in suspension in the diluent to a solution of the sulphonation agent. Alternatively, the polymer and a solution of the sulphonation agent may be introduced simultaneously into the diluent and the process made continuous by withdrawal of the reaction mixture. The product may be separated by filtering or centrifuging and converted to salts by reaction with ammonia, sodium or potassium hydroxide or amines. The salts may be used for treating textiles, preparing emulsions and dispersions and soil conditioning. Specification 773,956 is referred to.
