An underwater energy storage system includes a tank for storing a compressed gas that is adapted to be stored underwater. The tank includes at least one water opening through which water from surrounding environment can flow into and out of the tank, and at least one gas opening through which the compressed gas is received. The underwater energy storage system further includes at least one duct communicating between the at least one opening for gas flow and a source of compressed gas and a compartment constructed over a roof of the tank, wherein said compartment is adapted for receiving weights at a sinking site of the tank.

1. An underwater energy storage system comprising:
a plurality of tanks, each of the plurality of tanks configured to store compressed gas underwater, wherein each of the plurality of tanks include at least one water opening through which water from a surrounding body freely flows and at least one gas opening for receiving and discharging the compressed gas, wherein free flow through the at least one water opening is responsive to gas flow into and out of the plurality of tanks; a first duct configured to communicate gas flow between the at least one gas opening of at least one of the plurality of tanks and a source of compressed gas; and at least one second duct configured to communicate gas flow between the at least one gas opening of each of the plurality of tanks; and at least one third duct configured to communicate as flow between the at least one gas opening in at least one of the plurality of tanks and a pneumatic device.
