Fibrous materials or fabrics of native or regenerated cellulose, cellulose esters, or organic condensation or polymerization products are impregnated with a chlorite solution having a pH of 3.5 to 5.0, removed from the solution and allowed to remain in the atmosphere at a temperature between 40 DEG C. and 73 DEG C. until the desired bleaching effect is achieved. In a modification of the process, the goods are impregnated with a neutral or weakly alkaline chlorite solution and, after removal from the solution, are treated with a volatile acid and steam to bring the pH to 3.5 to 5, whereafter the goods are allowed to remain in the atmosphere at a temperature between 40 DEG and 73 DEG C. In examples: (1) cotton goods, after treating with an aqueous solution containing sodium chlorite, an alkylaryl sulphonate and methyl taurine at a pH of 4.8 and temperature of 60 DEG C., are allowed to remain at 60 DEG C. for 5 hours; (2) cotton fabric, after treating at 30 DEG C. with a solution containing sodium chlorite and an alkylaryl sulphonate, remains at 60 DEG C. for 4 hours and is then treated with oleyl methyl taurine; (3) mercerized cotton, after being impregnated at 25 DEG C. with a solution containing sodium chlorite and a condensation product of a high M.W. fatty acid with an amino-carboxylic acid, lysalbine or a protalkinic acid at a pH of 8, is squeezed to a moisture content of 100%, heated to 70 DEG C. with steam containing acetic acid and allowed to remain at 63 DEG C. for 3 hours; (4) linen tow is treated at 30 DEG C. with sodium chlorite at a pH of 4.8 and allowed to remain overnight at 40 DEG C.; it is then treated with water at 60 DEG C. and with a solution at 75 DEG to 80 DEG C. containing hydrogen peroxide, sodium hydroxide, calcined sodium carbonate and water-glass. Example 5 relates to the treatment of viscose rayon and Example 6 to polyamide fibres. In Example 7, cotton goods are treated at 90 DEG C. with a solution containing a mixture of an alkylarylsulphonate and an alkylphenylpolyglycol ether. Cotton goods may be scoured before the process. |
