PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a ballast water treatment apparatus and method that enable stable treatment of a large amount of ballast water.SOLUTION: A ballast water treatment apparatus comprises a filter device and an irradiation device for irradiating ultraviolet rays to filtered water. The filter device removes 99.999% or more of L-size organisms having a minimum part size of 50 μm or more, and removes 90% or more of S-size organisms having a minimum part size of 10 μm or more and less than 50 μm. The irradiation device can sterilize 90% of the S-size organisms with power consumption of 13 kW per 250 m/h of the filtered water immediately after the treatment.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
