摘要 734,545. Automatic phase control systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. April 22, 1953, No. 11075/53. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XL (c)] Two spaced aerials feed the same signal to a single receiver through a passive coupling network with phase-shifting means automatically so controlled in accordance with the received energies that the energy input to the receiver is a maximum. In the embodiment described, aerials 1, 2. Fig. 1, feed two conjugate arms of a magic-T hybrid junction 5 through wave-guides 3, 4. The output wave-guide arms 6, 7 of the junction feed two conjugate arms of a further magic-T junction 8, the arm 7 being connected to the latter through a phase shifter 9 and wave-guide 10. The other two arms 11, 12 of junction 8 feed, respectively, a dummy load 13 and radio receiver 14. A A.G.C. line 19 of receiver 14 is connected to a control circuit 18 which supplies power to the field winding 17 of a motor 15 controlling the phase shifter 9 through a shaft 16. The control circuit is arranged to cause the motor 15 to run alternately forwards and backwards to traverse the phase shifter continuously through the position affording the maximum input to receiver 14 and minimum input to the dummy load 13. The control circuit may alternatively be operated, in accordance with the minimum power in the dummy load, by a rectifier included in the latter. The input terminal 20, Fig. 2, of the control circuit receives, from the receiver gain control circuit, a periodically varying voltage A, Fig. 3, having cusps 21 and a mean value 24. A differential amplifier 22, 23 provides a voltage B depending on the difference between voltage A and the mean voltage 24. The valves 22, 23 have a common cathode resistor 37 the input being connected to the grid of valve 22 and being repeated across resistor 37 and hence on the cathode of valve 23, while the grid of the latter is fed with an integrated voltage produced from the input by the long timeconstant circuit 39, 40. The voltage B, at the anode of valve 23, is differentiated by circuit 36, 51 to provide a short positive followed by a short negative pulse for each peak 25 of voltage B. These pairs of pulses each trigger a flip-flop pair 26, 27 to the second and back to the first stable condition and a shortcircuited delay network 45, in the anode circuit of valve 27, determines the duration of a positive pulse occurring when the anode voltage rises and a succeeding negative pulse when the anode voltage falls again. These pairs of pulses 28, curve C, Fig. 3, are applied to a scale-of-two counter 29, 30 which responds to the positive pulses only which are fed through rectifiers 62, 63 to the anodes of valves 29, 30 respectively. The two halves of the field winding 17 of the phase-shifter motor are connected respectively in the anode circuits of triodes 31, 32 which have a common cathode resistor 64 ensuring that only one valve can be conducting at any one time. Each time the counter circuit is switched over their conditions reverse, curves D, E, due to the connection between the anode of valve 30 and the grid of valve 31, and the direction of the motor is reversed.
