PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical modulation device that can improve light usage efficiency even when using a spatial optical modulator capable of modulating only light of a linear polarization of a specific azimuth.SOLUTION: An optical modulation device 1A comprises: a reflection type spatial modulator 10; a polarization separation unit 31; a first polarization plane rotation unit 33; a polarization synthesis unit 41; and a second polarization plane rotation unit 43. The polarization separation unit 31 is configured to perform a polarization separation of input light Lin to output first separation light L11 (S polarization) and second separation light L12 (P polarization). The first polarization plane rotation unit 33 is configured to regard the first separation light L11 as the P polarization, and a first area 11A of a modulation plane 11 of the spatial optical modulator 10 is configured to modulate the first separation light L11 to output first modulation light L21, and a second area 11B is configured to modulate the second separation light L12, and output second modulation light L22.
