Provided are: a photoelectric conversion element provided with an electrically conductive support, an electrolyte-containing photosensitive layer, an electrolyte-containing charge-transfer layer, and a counter electrode, wherein said photosensitive layer is provided with semiconductor fine particles which support a metal complex dye represented by formula (I); a dye-sensitized solar cell; the metal complex dye; and a dye solution. In formula (AL-1): Za and Zb represent non-metal atom groups required to form five-membered or six-membered rings; at least one from among ring Za and ring Zb has an acidic group; LW represents nitrogen or CRW; RW represents hydrogen or a substituent; L1 represents a ring group represented by any of formulae (X-1) to (X-3); L2 represents an ethenylene group, an ethynylene group, or an aromatic ring group which is either a monocyclic ring selected from the group consisting of a benzene ring, a furan ring, a silole ring, a selenophene ring, and nitrogen-containing aromatic rings, or a polycyclic ring including said monocyclic ring as a fused ring, said aromatic ring group being bonded to L1 by a ring-constituting carbon atom that forms the monocyclic ring; Z represents hydrogen or a substituent; and the -L1-L2-Z group does not have an acidic group or an amino group. Zt2 and Zt3 represent non-metal atom groups required to form fused rings with the thiophene rings in the respective formulae. RT1 to RT3 represent substituents. PT1 represents an integer in the range of 0-2. PT2 and PT3 are 0 or above, and are not greater than the number of hydrogen atoms when the groups represented by formulae (X-2) and (X-3) are unsubtituted.
