The present invention addresses the problem of providing: an optical film which has such thermochromic properties that the degree of shielding near-infrared light can be controlled in accordance with the temperature environment, and which has a low haze and is excellent in terms of crack resistance and tight adhesiveness even when used over a long period; and a process for producing the optical film. The optical film comprises an optical functional layer, and is characterized in that the optical functional layer has a sea-island structure composed of a sea region formed from a binder resin and island regions constituted of vanadium-dioxide-containing fine particles. The optical film is further characterized in that: all the vanadium dioxide-containing fine particles including the primary particles and the secondary particles have a number-average particle diameter of 200 nm or less; the distance to the nearest island region, in terms of wall-to-wall distance, is in the range of 1-1,000 nm on average; and the number of island regions each having a distance to the nearest island region, in terms of wall-to-wall distance, of 1,100 nm or greater is 10% or less relative to the number of all the island regions. |
