Oral dosage forms of osteoclast inhibitors, such as nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates, can be used to treat or alleviate pain or related conditions.

A method of treating a bone marrow lesion of the knee comprising: selecting a patient having a bone marrow lesion of the knee and OARSI Grade 0 or Kellgren and Lawrence Grade 0 or Grade 1 of joint space narrowing, and administering an inhibitor of osteoclast activity to the patient for the treatment of the bone marrow lesion, wherein the inhibitor of osteoclast activity is ibandronic acid, risedronic acid, or alendronic acid.
