In the present invention, a portable information device has the following: a device main body that includes a display screen; a rotation sensor that has an operation unit capable of forward/reverse rotation and a rotation direction detection unit for detecting the rotation direction of the operation unit; a rotation direction determination unit that determines the rotation direction of the operation unit on the basis of the output from the rotation direction detection unit; and a cursor movement unit that moves a cursor on the display screen on the basis of the determination results from the rotation direction determination unit. If the rotation direction determination unit has determined that the rotation direction of the operation unit is in the forward direction, the cursor movement unit moves the cursor in a first direction on the display screen, whereas if the rotation direction determination unit has determined that the rotation direction of the operation unit is in the reverse direction, the cursor operation unit moves the cursor in a second direction on the display screen. |
