PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide high solid content coating compositions that have desired performance when blending acrylics and polyesters, wherein: the acrylics require a large amount of solvents, as solvent-based thermosetting coatings; and the polyesters have low VOC content and provide a good balance of performance.SOLUTION: Solvent-based thermosetting coating compositions contain a curable polyester resin blended with an acrylic polymer, a crosslinker, and a solvent, wherein the acrylic polymer comprises an unsaturated ethylene monomer comprising at least one hydroxyl, epoxy, carboxyl, blocked phenol, or acetoacetoxy group. The polyester resin comprises: isophthalic acid; and 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol. The coating composition exhibits good dry time, has compatibility with each other, and exhibits sag resistance and hardness development. The coating compositions can be used to prepare clear coat or pigmented coatings for automotive OEM, auto refinish, and other applications.SELECTED DRAWING: None |
