Compounds of structure (I):;;including stereoisomers, tautomers and salts thereof, wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, X, Y and Z are as defined herein. Such compounds are useful for the preparation of diarylpropane compounds. Methods for the preparation of compounds of structure (I) are also disclosed, as are methods employing compounds of structure (I) for the preparation of diarylpropanes.

1. A compound having the following structure (I):or a stereoisomer, tautomer or salt thereof, wherein:
R1, R2, R3 and R4 are each independently hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl; one of R5 or R6 is oxo, and the other of R5 or R6 is hydrogen; and X, Y and Z are each independently absent or hydrogen, or X and Y or Z and Y may join to form a bond, wherein X, Y and Z are each chosen such that all valences are satisfied.
