Provided are a practical rib type optical waveguide and an optical multiplexer/demultiplexer using the same for which polarization dependency, wavelength dependency, and the like are small. This optical waveguide type optical multiplexer/demultiplexer is provided with a substrate, M input optical waveguides and N output optical waveguides formed from a single mode rib type optical waveguides, a multimode optical interference region formed from rib type optical waveguides, and reversible tapered regions formed from M × N rib type optical waveguides smoothly connecting the input and output optical waveguides and the multimode optical interference region. Both side surfaces of the multimode optical interference region are formed in a stepped shape. |
