The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for processing an image photographed by a black box for a vehicle, capable of extracting a string by separating an image signal of a license plate area before storing an image and by applying various special effects and capable of specially storing a final string by combining letters recognized at the highest probability and by completing the final string. The apparatus comprises: a license plate recognition unit for recognizing a license plate area from an image signal inputted through a camera unit in advance before storing the photographed image; a screen division processing unit for dividing the license plate area, recognized through the license plate recognition unit, into a special image signal; a special effect processing unit for applying a special effect for improving a string recognition rate to the license plate image signal separated in the screen division processing unit; and a letter recognition processing unit for comparing and matching the letters in each position by separating letters of the strings after sequentially applying the prepared special effects in the special effect processing unit and for outputting the completed string by separately combining the strings which have the highest recognition rates. |
