In the method for controlling a linear drive, a relationship of a control variable and a response variable is subject to a hysteresis. A model is used for the relationship with at least one polynomial function. The hysteresis is, at least partially, compensated by means of the model. The linear drive unit comprises a linear drive, in which a relationship of a control variable and a response variable is subject to a hysteresis. The linear drive unit further comprises a hysteresis compensation device, which is designed to implement such a method.
