PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide techniques relating generally to the field of buffer solutions having bacteriostatic and/or bactericidal activity.SOLUTION: Buffer solutions for pharmaceutical preparations that have bactericidal activity preferentially against gram negative bacteria are provided. Methods for use of the buffer solutions in reducing the occurrence of blood stream infections in a mammal are also provided.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
