Provided is a method for producing a polycarboxylic acid polymer by adding a monomer composition that includes unsaturated monocarboxylic acid monomers and/or unsaturated dicarboxylic acid monomers into a reactor and conducting a polymerization reaction, wherein it is possible with the method for producing a polycarboxylic acid polymer to effectively suppress foaming of the polymerization reaction solution. The method for producing a polycarboxylic acid polymer of the present invention involves adding a monomer composition that includes unsaturated monocarboxylic acid monomers and/or unsaturated dicarboxylic acid monomers into a reactor and conducting a polymerization reaction, wherein a defoaming agent is added until the time when 100 mass% of the total amount of the monomer composition is added.
