A machine for lapping flat work such as the running faces of rotary mechanical seal elements comprises a rotatable lap 20 e.g. of cast iron projecting upwardly through a circular opening in the table 12 and having an annular abrading surface 22 with radial slots 24. Wear rings 26, e.g., also of cast iron, rest on the annulus 22 and overhang slightly both its inner and outer edges. The rings are restrained from rotating bodily about the axis of the lap, each ring having secured thereto a yoke 32 formed with a square opening 35 into which projects a square portion 36 of a drive shaft 38, a small amount of play being provided to allow the wear ring to be always in face-to-face contact with the lap annulus. The shafts 38 are journalled in bosses 60 on the ends of arms of a spider 40 supported by a post on the table 12. A drive belt 64 passes around pulleys 62 on the upper ends of the shafts 38 ; one shaft 38 is driven by belt 68 from an expandable pulley 70. The latter is driven by belt 100 from a reversible electric motor M2. The motor is carried by a slide 94 adjustable along a bar 90 by a screw shaft 106 operated by a handwheel 109, thus adjusting the transmission ratio of the belt drive to the conditioning rings. Lapping compound in a tank 110, containing an'agitator driven by an electric motor M3, flows outwardly through a discharge orifice controlled by valve actuated by a solenoid 118, and then along a flexible wire 120 the free end of which bears lightly against the side of one of the rings 26. The work pieces are placed within the wear rings and the desired shape of lap is maintained by adjusting the rate of rotation of the rings.
