Acetylene and chlorinated hydrocarbons are produced when chlorine is reacted with an aliphatic hydrocarbon and/or a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon at above 700 DEG C. The reactants are preferably introduced into the reaction zone at a velocity above 10 metres per second and a diluent may be added which may be inert or react, and if it reacts may produce or absorb chlorine. Sub-atmospheric pressure may be used and a flame may be formed. By-products may be reacted further with chlorine in a second stage or recycled to the primary reaction. The reactants may be sprayed with water to cool them and absorb hydrogen chloride. In Examples (1) methane is reacted with chlorine to give acetylene, methyl chloride and vinyl chloride; (2) ethylene, hydrogen chloride and chlorine give acetylene, vinyl chloride, 1:1- and 1:2-dichloroethylene; (3) cracked gas (ethylene, propylene, butylene, methane and ethane) with chlorine and tetrachloroethane give acetylene, vinyl chloride, dichloroethylene and perchloroethylene with small amounts of hexachlorobutadiene; (4) ethylene and chlorine give acetylene and vinyl chloride; (5) ethylene, vinyl chloride, methyl chloride and chlorine give acetylene, vinyl chloride, methyl chloride and dichloroethylene; the vinyl and methyl chlorides are separated and recycled; (6) ethylene and chlorine give vinyl chloride, methyl chloride and acetylene and hydrogen chloride which may be reacted to give vinyl chloride; (7) methane, carbon tetrachloride and chlorine give acetylene, methyl chloride and dichloroethylene; (8) ethyl chloride and chlorine give acetylene, vinyl chloride, ethylene and dichloroethylene; (9) ethyl chloride, ethylene chloride and chlorine give acetylene, vinyl chloride and ethylene. |
