<p>A metallic-appearing protective film, which may be attached to surfaces of materials such as metal, wood, glass and fabric, comprises a transparent oriented polyester film having a thickness not exceeding 2 mils and composed of a condensation product of monomers including terephthalic and/or isophthalic acid and ethylene glycol and/or other glycols, a reflective metal coating applied to one surface of said film by vapour deposition in a vacuum, and a thin adhesive coating bonded to said metal coating. The metal may be aluminium or gold. The adhesive preferably comprises a rubbery butadieneacrylonitrile polymer and a heat-advancing phenol-formaldehyde resin together with plastizers and tackifiers and may be coated directly on to the metal-coated surface and dried or may be first coated on a carrier web, such as polyethylene-coated Kraft paper partially or completely dried, re-re-activated by moistening with solvent and transferred to the coated surface under squeeze-roll pressure.</p> |
