An internal combustion engine operating with incomplete combustion for instance for the production of synthesis gas simultaneously with mechanical power output is first started with a fuel-air mixture as ordinarily used in the normal operation of diesel or gas engines and is switched over to synthesis gas production when conditions are favourable. Thus the engine can be started with a normal methane air mixture and then switched over to a methaneoxygen mixture for gas production. In an installation consisting of a plurality of separate engine units one or more of the units may be run as a normal internal combustion engine that is for the production of mechanical energy means being provided to switch it over during running. The exhaust may pass to the atmosphere directly or after passing through an exhaust heat utilizing device.</p> |
