507,617. Valve gear. AUTO UNION AKT.-GES. June 21, 1938, No. 18489. Convention date, June 21, 1937. [Class 7 (vi)] Fuel-injection valves are actuated by magnetostric tive forces occasioned by the variations in length of a bar of alloy when subjected to an electric field. The Figure shows such a bar 1 arranged coaxially within an electromagnetic coil 2 and between the ends of a U - shaped member 5 connected at 11 to the valve 6. The two arms of the member 5 are formed with fulcra 7 bearing on the casing 3 and arranged to divide the arms into short and long portions 9, 10 respectively, so that elongations of the bar 1 are magnified so as to produce a deformation of the cross-piece 11 of the member 5 as indicated in dotted lines, thus opening the valve. The valve is closed by fuel pressure when the bar 1 returns to its original length as the current supply to the coil 2 is cut off. The bar 1 may be of an alloy containing 20 per cent nickel and 80 per cent iron.. It may also consist of several layers of different alloys, so as to bend as well as expand |
