A method of mass spectrometry comprises separating ions temporally in an ion separator 5 (e.g. an ion mobility separator) and analysing the mass to charge ratio of the ions, product ions or fragment ions in a mass analyser 8. The drift times of the ions through the ion separator are measured by measuring ion arrival times, e.g. using the mass analyser. The drift times are then corrected to account for the transit times (TTR2, TF0) through one or more intermediate regions or devices disposed between the ion separator and the mass analyser. The transit times may be determined using empirical relationships or equations, as part of a calibration routine or calculated from first principles, and may depend on the characteristics of the ions as well as the characteristics of the region or device. Equations are disclosed for the transit times or delays in different ion optical and ion transfer devices. |
