A deferred - action battery comprises a plurality of flat cells each having a sheet-form cathode, a sheet magnesium anode and a premoulded sheet of conductive plastic stuck to the entire surface of the anode remote from the cathode and providing the series connection between the cells. Fig. 1 shows a number of cells 10 of a deferred action battery, each cell consisting of a copper positive terminal 12, a cuprous chloride depolarizer 14, a layer of electrolyte-absorbent paper 16, the magnesium anode 18 and the premoulded sheet of conductive plastic 20. As an alternative the positive terminal may be silver and the depolarizer silver chloride. The conductive plastic may be polyisobutylene or synthetic rubber mixed with particles of graphite, acetylene black or silver, and the pre-moulded sheet material may be moistened with carbon tetrachloride, methylene chloride or ethylene dichloride and pressed on to the anode to make it adhere thereto. The vertical edges of each cell are coated with electrolyte-proof dielectric material and the cells are staggered as shown to minimize local action between the cells. The battery can be made by assembling the various cell elements 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and the dielectric material 24, all in strip form as shown in Fig. 4, and cutting the strip into sections which are assembled to form the battery. |
