A vehicle mounted AC electrical generator system is disclosed, the vehicle (10) including a prime mover (14) controlled by an engine control module (22) and a compartment (140) for said prime mover. The AC electrical generator system comprises a transmission (16) controlled by a transmission control module (26) connected to a primary mechanical output of the prime mover (14), an AC electrical generator (44) positioned in the vehicle (10) outside of the compartment (140) and having an input (46) for receiving mechanical power to drive the AC electrical generator to produce electricity, and a power take off unit (50) operably connected to the transmission (16) and the input (46) of the AC electrical generator (44). The power take off unit (50) is operable to engage and disengage with a drive gear (158) of the transmission (16) to as to selectively transfer mechanical power generated by the prime mover to the input of the AC electrical generator. The prime mover (14) is controlled by the engine control module (22) to a predetermined RPM above idle when varying electrical loads are applied to the AC electrical generator.
